Movie Review: Iron Man
Let me just say this: Iron Man is Fan-fucking-tastic.

Absolutely awesome.

The storyline, dialogue and acting are so tight throughout this whole flick. It's enjoyable and fun and there was really no part of it I didn't like. There were a lot of grins and chuckles - no real laugh out loud parts except a couple - but Robert Downey, Jr. has created the coolest superhero character - EVER. He was completely believable as a superhero, which I honestly didn't think he could do.

Gwyneth Paltrow was okay as Pepper Potts, though Pepper was a bit more ditzy than I'm used to from Gwyneth. I kept seeing her in Sky Captain which I think was a better fit. I did like the constant low-level sexual tension; that was really well done.

Here were my two favorite pieces of this movie - both minor, but both very unique:

1.) The Robots - These are actually robots. They don't look like humans, they look like robots - they're basically long motorized arms. But they have...personality. Or do they? Stark talks to them as if they're real...even berating them at times. And they seem to respond to him. But do they? Does the one robot actually droop when Stark threatens to sell him to a community college? Or are we anthropomorphizing it the way that Stark (who is clearly a lonely man) is?

This is BEAUTIFULLY done.

2.) The Last Line - This is the best line in all of superhero-dom. It was totally unexpected, and J. sat through the credits (we were waiting for the Samuel L. Jackson thing) and kept repeating that he couldn't believe that Stark said that.

I loved that! Brilliant!!

(P.S. - The Samuel L. Jackson thing is probably worth sitting through the credits for if you're a total geek and don't want to miss anything, or if you want a hint of what the sequel will be. But it lasts about 5 seconds and you could probably find it on YouTube, so...)

I thought it was a great film too, I really enjoyed it. The casting was awesome and the bit with Samuel L Jackson worth sitting through the credits for.

The interaction between Stark and the robots was very well done, the last line still has me giggling and any film which starts off with the main character being literally hoisted by his own petard can't be a bad thing in my book.

I liked how they were able to show so definitively why TS would have changed completely, without going over the top preachy.

I've not long got back from seeing it and I have to agree that it was a very cool film. Well done and fairly faithful in the characterisation. There were several places where I giggled and a fair few more where I groaned but then I always do forget just how much I want to slap Tony Stark!

I am less than happy with the casting of Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury but then I haven't read any of the Ultimates stuff and my other half hates it with a passion so maybe my view is biased. Having said that SLJ rocks and I'm sure he will manage to make me forget that I said he is about as much Nick Fury as David Hallelhoff was. Apparently there is a reference in the comics to him playing Nick if an IC movie was made, that is the kind of in joke geekiness that I generally approve of. So was the "10 Rings" reference.

The robots were great, Jarvis was responsible for a lot of giggling (what is it about superheroes and sarcastic butler types?). The last line threw me, again the lack of Ultimates knowledge apparently as the whole cover of Iron Man as Tony's bodyguard doesn't happen.

I shall stop frothing now, or at least go do it in my own journal!

I'm unsure about SLJ as Nick Fury, too, but then, what is SLJ not awesome in?

Another thing I really liked were the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Could you have gotten a more geeky bunch, and then when it came down to it, they were kickass agents - yet still geeks. They were pitch perfect.

I like SLJ as Nick Fury, but I think that's because I've been reading ultimates, and yeah I really loved the stuff with S.H.I.E.L.D too.

*Points at own LJ* I decided the moment he started demanding a cheese burger that it had to be done...

The SHIELD agents were cool and I did like the fact that they used the full name for most of the film followed by "you've gotta do something about that!" It made far more sense than these organisations that seem to spring into existance with a spontaneous name that just happens to have a neat acronym. It managed to keep the comic book feel and lose a lot of the excess cheese that never translates well to film.
